Lau Wing-Chuen
Artistic Director

Lau Wing-Chuen was apprenticed to Master WongYue-Sang, who was revered in the Cantonese opera world throughout Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong. Under the tutelage of Master Wong, he learned the intricate art of composition, accompaniment and “cheung hong” (the art of Cantonese opera singing) for over two decades. The strong bond between them was more than that between a master and his disciple; indeed, it was more like that between a father and son.

From the seventies to the eighties, Lau Wing-Chuen was the musical director of several Cantonese operatic bands before he went to Canada to establish the Lau Wing Chuen Institute of Chinese Performing Arts. He also founded several musical societies in Edmonton and Toronto to promote Chinese music, and was recognized for his contributions to preserving traditional Chinese cultural heritage in both cities. In 1989 he was appointed as an instructor by the Music Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Between 2003 and 2012, he was invited to direct the “Amway Cantonese Opera Foundation Certificate Program” and personally taught all those related courses offered through the Hong Kong Art Centre and the Li Ka Shing Institute of Professional and Continuing Education, of the Open University of Hong Kong. In 2012, he was presented the “Teaching Excellence Award” by LiPlace, at the Open University.

For his dedication to teaching and promoting the art of Cantonese opera, Lau Wing-Chuen has been honoured by the Toronto Chinese community and the Ontario Government of Canada. In 1992 he was presented a Napoleon Outstanding Award by the former, and in 2003 a Fifteen Year of Outstanding Volunteer Award by the latter.

In 2019 he served as the Artistic Director and Band Leader, and produced the concert that marked the 100th Anniversary of Master Wang Yue-Sang with several generations of students of the Master. He serves in various leadership positions in the Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Cantonese Music Art and Federation. He is the founding and resident artistic director of Multi Voices One Heart, and serves as the lead musician at all its public performances.
